For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 677 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 677 | I got a 1951 five window 3100 and found a website that says that you can update the old suspension by using a 1973 thru 1987 chevy 1/2 ton front suspension. and that it all bolts on with some 1/2 spacers between the saddle and frame has anyone tryed this and how do you like it ? Some people are like Slinkies, Their not really good for nothing... But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs. 1951 3100 350 TBI Gallery Toddzilla... Aren't they completly different? Plus wouldn't it be too wide for our trucks? I have a '78 1/2 ton that I can have anything off of it for free so hope it will work! How low compared to a say a camero front end would you be able to get the truck- just as low with new springs and spindles maybe? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 164 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 164 | As the first poster says, the AD frame rails are only an inch narrower, so all it takes is a 1/2 inch plate on each side.
However, I believe this swap puts the tires out pretty wide, and they will stick out of the fenders some. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | The '63 to '87 front suspension are all essentially the same design and while the discussion is usually limited to the disk brake versions they are all very similar.
Even when the crossmember is narrowed to fit the frame the track is really to wide.
Another things to note about this approach is that it does NOT lower the truck. To get the truck lower using this approach would require drop spindles or modified A-arms.
I'm considering using this approach on one of my projects but in my case the wider track is a plus not a minus.
I'm planning to use dually type wheels on this particular truck, and may need spacers to get the wheels out far enough even with the wider track. My project isn't typical of what most people are trying to accomplish.
