261 that seems to not have an enormous oil filter and plumbing hanging off the side... how do they do that?

Not all the 261 motors are full flow. 54 through at least 57 are bypass. All the Canadian 261 blocks are bypass. And it appears that some later motors could have been either way depending on whether the pin on the block was set in or left out.

Yes, you can plumb the 1958-1963 USA 261 with a spin-on full-flow oil filter adapter.

Yes, in those years/engines, there in a pin/plug in the USA 261 block that has to be "set" for/from bypass or full-flow.

Original full-flow filter is shown below.

The title of the video says if all- - - -"1954". There's no way to run a full flow filter on that one without doing major modifications to the internal oil passages, and whomever built that engine doesn't care much about it- - - -they didn't even put a bypass filter on it.

Did all or any '54 261 engines arrive at the dealership with an oil filter?

No standard-equipment oil filter for 1954 235/261 high-pressure engines.

RPO 237 1qt (AC-S6, 115 filter) or 2qt (AC-S2 P117).
I think it was also available as an accessory.

I don’t know how true this is, but over the years I have been told that if the filter was painted black, installed on the factory line as an option, if it was painted a color, and there were various colors throughout the years, then it was dealer installed, mechanic installed or over the counter owner installed.
