It does not seem like the timing cover can be any smaller. The mounting area of the water pump is thicker than the old one I pulled off. Does this issue come up often? I've never heard of Weiand making anything but race engine stuff, so it's pretty obvious you're not working on a stovebolt six, right? Is there some reason for not using an original equipment type part?

Sounds like you're working on a SBC. Do you also have an aftermarket timing cover? Also don't forget SBC water pumps come in a long snout and short snout versions.
