I happen to have a 55 Cadillac engine,V8, in the garage. It has an intact generator. Can I use it on my 270 ? thanks in advance | | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 Crusing in the Passing Lane | | Crusing in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 | Electricity knows no brands, if it fits, use it.

The Caddy will probably have a higher-amperage generator than the GMC, which is a good thing, but in order to make use of the higher capacity, the corresponding regulator must be used, or your original regulator would have to be reset to the higher amp rating. The Cadillac generator will probably have ball bearings front and rear and it will probably be longer from end to end, so some tinkering with the GMC bracket might be necessary. I usually use a short section of 1/4" pipe as a spacer, with a longer bolt on one end.
Someone who is skilled with a TIG welder can fix those broken end frames, so don't discard them. Jerry

Don't have the regulator from the caddy so I'll see about getting one of those. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,767 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,767 | OK- - - -I just looked up some specifications. 54-56 Cadillacs ran a 30 amp generator, which is probably the same as the GMC ran. Your regulator will most likely work without doing any swapping. Be sure to polarize the generator by momentarily touching a jumper wire from the BAT terminal on the regulator to the ARM terminal. (about 1 second is plenty) That's particularly important if the GMC is running a positive ground electrical system. The generator will work on either polarity as long as it's polarized after installation. Jerry

At least check to make sure it is properly charging and not just brightening the lights. Perhaps you know this already.
