I'm new to Stovebolt. I'm trying to get torque values for connecting rods and main bearings for my 46 Chevy. I've been searching the forums looking for this info and found one that says 35 - 45 for connecting rods and 100 - 110 for main bearings. My questions is are these correct torques? Would this be the same for 216, 235 and 261 engines?

Check here for a service manual, http://www.oldirononline.com

or, check here, http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/index.htm

One or the other should have a shop manual that shows torque settings.

I've tried following both of the links without much luck. Here is my situation. I purchased my 46 Chevy truck about 2 months ago. I've since found out it has a pretty bay rear main oil seal leak. I know it has a 6 cylinder GM motor but I'm not sure if it's a 216, 235 or 261? I need to drop the pan, loosen the cap and main bearing to replace the oil seal. I can buy oil pan gaskets for all 3 of the motors so I hope I have that problem covered. Why I can't find out is the torque values for the bearings. I thought sure someone here on Stovebolt would know this information.

Why don’t you post up the #s on your engine so we can tell you exactly which engine you have. Someone here (probably many) who can then give you the needed torque values. Help us help you.🛠

Mike B. is really good at converting the numbers, I'm not. I have assembly spec's for a 235, but that probably doesn't help you.
Someone will help out, I'm sure.
Good luck!

do you know the torque specs for the cap bearings and main bearings? That would be very helpful if it turns out I have a 235

Can't seem to locate a page that has all the specs on it, but here's the bearing cap section. 100-110 ft. lb.

I believe you have a 1947 Canadian 216 from a passenger car.

Was your car built in Canada by any chance?

I'm not sure, but I was told the truck was purchased in Canada. I also found a registration card in the glove box that shows the truck was registered in British Columbia in 2009

Does the GVW data plate say "Made In Canada"?

Yes it does. I didn't notice that before. Like I said, I've only owned the truck a little less that 2 months and half that time I was in the Florida Keys.

Joe H gave me the specs for a 1948 216. Do you think they would be the same for a 1947 car engine?

On my 1956 block the rear main bolts are only 1/2" thread the rest of the mains have 9/16 thread.

What's weird is that the bolt heads are the same size on all of them.

According to the generic chevy torque table; I'd think that the rear main should only be torqued ~75ft-lb instead of 105 as with the rest. But I haven't found any chevy instructions mentioning this.

Anyone else noticed this?
