on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 360 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 360 | Hope this is in the right forum. Have my 46 1/2 ton pickup down to the frame. Found a couple of bad bolts holding the transmission cross member in place. This is the cross member just to the rear of the battery box. Decided I would like to take it out and clean it out, as it has a load of dirt and road grime in it. Bolts are out but it wont budge. Don't see any welds holding it in. Possibly a little corrosion, but is it press fit between the frame rails? If I spread the frame slightly, and remove to the rear where the frame widens, does that seem correct? Anybody taken this cross member out and have any tips, its greatly appreciated.
Big ed

So if your has bolts it seems it has been out before? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 360 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 360 | GW. Thanks for the reply. Sent you a PM

Without looking at any documentation I recall this is addressed in the service manuals. Tap one end of the cross member towards the rear with a decent sized hammer and it will budge, and by angling it will come free of the frame. It is tight enough that when you replace it, you must use a hammer slightly to line up the bolt holes.
