The 1954 steering mast has holes in it for the RPO/Accessory turn-signal wire-harness.
And, there is a different "cover/cone" around the steering column, under the steering wheel.

Except for those differences in the 1954 steering column, could someone use an earlier 1/2-ton column in a 1954/55st truck?

Same splines for pitman and steering wheel, and same mounting.
The parts book shows the 1947-53 steering shaft to be 5/16" longer on the 1954.
