Hello, I have a 1947 3100 half ton, I need to rebuild the transmission. I have 2 different transmissions for the truck. Is there a way to know what transmission came in the truck originally? 1 is (590474)? 2 is (591195)? Thanks
590474 I think Chevy, because it has a Chevy bow tie above the numbers. The other numbers I see are on the shift plate and they are (590511) I don’t know if that helps? I don’t know how to include a picture or I would. I been doing some reading here, I found that the 1947 3100 came with a 3 speed, but a 4 speed was an option. My question now is what’s a better transmission to go with 3 or 4 speed? It’s going on a 1955 235. I won’t be doing any towing, or burning rubber. Rusty Heaps you are correct sir.

I'm going out on a limb here and saying that transmission is from the early 30's.

High (3rd) gear will be the same in both transmissions at 1:1, but the 41-47 truck trans will have 2nd and 3rd gears synchronized...the early trans may not be synchronized.

I typed a long post the other day about your transmissions and I guess I never hit the post button because it's not here...
So, after further research I found that one of your transmissions is a 3-speed and the other is a 4-speed.
590474 = 1931-47 truck 4-speed. The date code looks like C 6 4 which would be March 6, 1934 (1934 is a guess on my part because I don't think they used the Bow Tie on the later transmissions built in the 1940's...someone please correct me if I'm wrong and they have a 1940's trans with the Bow Tie).
591195 = 1941-47 truck 3-speed.
Both would be correct in your 1947 truck, however the 3-speed might be synchronized while the 4-speed is not...does the 4-speed have the reverse lock out lever at the gear shift knob?
Both will be direct drive in High Gear. The 3-speed might be easier to drive, but not as good getting the load moving (no granny gear).
