I have a 1984 tilt column in my 49 and it works well.

We probably need more information on what you are trying to accomplish. Be aware that the 56 column is attached to the steering box as an assembly. If you plan on installing power steering because the steering box is worn out it may be a way to go. If you have the original column shifted transmission, a floor shift of some kind would likely be required. If you are changing to an auto trans just about any later model or aftermarket column can be used with some modifications.
