That is the mold (also called pattern) number to identify it in case of a problem with a casting. There were several molds for same block/head. Several foundrys. Determine application by the casting number/part number and date codes.

I was thinking he wanted to know what the GM5 was. I didn't notice he had already called it a mold number. If someone has changed the original two posts, that was a bad idea.
