My father in law and I have a 53 3600 that we want to turn into a street rod. We are thinking of doing a frame swap over to a s-10 frame. We are hoping that this will let us upgrade the suspension/steering/motor/transmission easier, and hopefully with better results then modifying the original frame. Will doing this give us the benefits we are looking for, or would it best to stick with the stock frame and modify it?

I am all in favor of the S10 swap. I am currently dropping 38 truck sheet metal onto an 82 S10 regular cab frame and I am very happy with the way it fits. I bought an almost complete truck from our local bone yard for $80. They were very enthusiastic about the project and helped me find a good truck. It has a lot miles on it, but it was driven into the ard and all of it was there. Nice little 2.8 (mini mouse) and a 4 speed. I priced a myriad of other solutions and all were big bucks. I figure I'll be able to cherry out this chassis and drive train doing everything for $1000. If it cost me $3000 I figure I'll still be money ahead. S10 parts are widely available and pretty reasonable. I live in a rust free area so the chassis is in great shape and I got a great S10 long bed for my next trailer project too!

Joker thanks for the link. Good info on the site and some stuff I might need too. After the 38 is streetable, I plan on starting a 52 project and then a 66. Might be done then????

Jim

Good luck with your project!

rev33, you raised an important point about learning of the work involved from the commercially oriented sites. The S10 frame swap brings alot of improvements like newer suspension, brakes steering, etc. Shock absorbers, steering parts & brake parts for your truck will be available at any AutoZone or Napa store. It is not a tiny job, but it is within the reach of your average mechanically incline enthusiast, provided he or she has the space & time to do it.
I like it.

I am at the which way point myself. I have a s-10 frame aswell as a 77 firebird clip and i was figuring instead of shelling out the $1000 for the kit, why not cut of the existing mounts from the ad frame and do a little fabrication work onto the s-10?

old iron vs. new plastic....no brainer!
