I saw this truck at a local event this weekend. The owner said it was a 1929 1/2 ton that had last been registered in 1956. It was bone stock, he said it had the 216 and 3 speed yet. The hood wasn't open so no engine pictures.

If memory serves, the 216 was first used in 1937 model trucks.

I'm not a history major with the inline 6 (but I am learning). I asked if I could look at the engine but the owner didn't seem inclined to open the hood. Might be He didn't know that much either. grin

From my stove bolt history notes:
1929 was the year General Motors introduced their new inline 194 cubic-inch (50 hp) ‘Over Head Valve’ six-cylinder in the Chevrolet and GMC trucks. The new six cost only ten dollars more than the 1928 four cylinder. GM marketed their new engines as giving Chevy owners “a six for the price of a four”. The new engine used an ‘Over Head Valve’ (OHV) layout, conceived by inventor and founder of Buick Motors, David Dunbar Buick, but patented in 1928 by Arthur Chevrolet. The 216 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine was introduced in 1937.

GMC did not use Chevrolet motors in any of their US built light duty trucks built back then, they used Pontiac and Buick until they started making their own engines.

Here are several pages of stovebolt-6 engine (Chevrolet, of course) information/specs.

If anyone finds any mistakes, or any omissions, please let me know.

I don't think Arthur Chevrolet could have patented the OHV engine in 1928. It had already been in use by, many manufacturers, for almost 20 years by then. Arthur Chevrolet never had any connection to Chevrolet Motor Company or General Motors.

The truck in the photos, above, is a 1933. The grille shell is a painted version of the 1932 passenger grille, which was plated. If someone can enlarge the Id plate enough, you will find the letters CB as part of the number.

You may be correct Mike that it is a 1933. The 1933 headlight bar is arched from side to side and the 1929 headlight bar is straight in the middle.

Arthur Chevrolet indeed held a patent for an overhead valve engine. Applied for on 3-1-1928, granted on 1-21-1930.

According to Wikipedia Buick was the first OHV production engine in the world in the year 1904. Maybe Chevrolet got a patent on the most ill conceived head design ever.

Semantics aside, there is a difference between a patent on THE ohv engine and a patent on AN ohv engine. You cannot be granted a patent on on object that has been in common use for 14 years. I will look up the Arthur Chevrolet patent to see what feature or "improvement" he invented. It is an interesting thing to research. In 1928, some or all, (Louis, Arthur, Gaston) of the Chevrolet brothers were involved in the manufacture of speed equipment, mostly for Model T Fords. The Chevrolet Brothers Manufacturing Company was located in Indianapolis, IN. They manufactured the Frontenac cylinder head in various ohv and ohc configurations. Arthurs patent was likely associated with this company.
Only Louis Chevrolet was ever associated with the Chevrolet Motor Company. That was for a short time around 1912.
I will try to report back on the patent.

Mike

The Arthur Chevrolet patent specifics are as follows:

Arrangement of valve stems in cylinder heads, the valves being orientated in parallel with the cylinder axis

and

Shape or arrangement of intake or exhaust channels in cylinder heads

Gaston Chevrolet was killed in a race in California in 1920.
Arthur committed suicide in 1946.
After co-founding theChevrolet Motor Company in1911, Louis sold his shares to William Durant in 1916. He died of a heart attack in 1941.
