Did Chevrolet ever do dual mainfolds as standard on anything? Like maybe a six-powered Camero? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | A lot of pickups in the late 70s early 80s with 6 cyls. used two outlets but they used the intregal head. Real piece of junk. Some one ton trucks from mid 80,s had a stainless header type manifold. They are rare & very expensive. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 | Fenton makes a cast iron dual exhaust headers for inline 6 motors like the chev 235, 216 and 261. If your truck is a GMC there are headers made by somebody else.
CHevrolet made a dual exhaust header for the 54-62 235 that they put in the corvette, which is expensive and hard to find.
You can also buy tubular headers, but they don't last as long as cast iron.
You can have your exisiting single exhaust manifold 'split' into two by someone who is good at welding cast iron near where you live or you can ship your single to Kansas Kustom and they'll split them and send them back.
There are advantages to a split manifold over cast dual headers or tubular headers. With a split manifold you still have the 'heat stove' that heats your intake manifold. You will have to find another way to heat your manifold if you go with header or split cast dual manifolds (fentons).
Best of luck!

I was fortunate enough to find an "old-timer" at the local radiator/exhaust shop that split my stock 216 exhaust manifold for $45.00.
If you check around, you might just get lucky too.

If you can find one it will cost you in excess of 400 bucks. Cheaper to use Fentons or have yours split. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 67 | Good point about the heat trap, I hadn't thought about that. I will ask about for a good cast welder in the area, and split the one I've got. I take it that you should aim to end up with three exhaust ports per outlet? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 16 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 16 | There's a Vette one on Ebay that's going to close soon. Second time it's been listed. It didn't meet reserve last time. Here's the link. http://tinyurl.com/ekg5b I have one just like it I will getting rid of soon. I will post it in the For Sale forum before going to Ebay with it. The 2 center outlets are on opposing banks so my guess is that's what generates the unusual sound. I don't think i've ever heard a split 6 but it seems everybody that does it loves it so i'm in. I saw a vette one at a local swap meet for $1000.00 CND. I think that would interfere with my shift box anyways. You can have it split with the heat box on either the front or rear outlet depending on clearance issues.

I back that up with Cherry Bomb glasspacks and I love the sound. It's loud, but I like loud. Before I added the headers and intake, I had the stock cast manifolds...and one morning I woke up remembering a dream in which I'd cut the exhaust off just in front of the muffler in order to run a "straight pipe." I laughed at myself and went out and started to do it. Big shock: It'd already been done and I didn't even know it. The stock exhaust was so restrictive that it was almost as quiet as if it had a muffler on it. I thought that it was just real low compression, but when I put the headers on and fired it up without any mufflers or tailpipes, it sounded like WW III going off under my feet. Good thing it was the 4th of July and there were a lotta firecrackers going off in the neighborhood. The difference in sound between the stock setup and the headers was unbelievable...but I've never regretted the swap and I have no plans to make it quieter. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 67 | Ray, just spent an hour reading through your website, that is pretty cool. And I want your headers as well, my engine is a 292 running a Clifford inlet and a DGAS 38 carb http://img76.imageshack.us/my.php?image=my66carbc7pj.jpg and I would really like to get the exhaust sorted this year. Hedman it is, looks good and should last the 9000 miles per year my insurance allows me. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 | You may need to do a little grinding and forming to get the headers to fit. I did, but it didn't take more than a coupla hours...and I work slow.
I think the Hedman's will work real well for your application. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 324 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 324 | Jim Carter has Fenton headers, the old school type, and also intake warming kit for those of us driving in the cold.

Can it be made to fit ? The reason I ask is it's a damm site cheaper than shipping new one over. This is what the vendor sent me:- "new / unused set of Clifford Performance headers, which are now surplus to requirements and which fit Chevrolet 250 cubic inch, straight, six cylinder engines These headers have been stored in a dry garage for several years and remain in perfect condition in their original box. The reserve on these headers is below what you would probably pay if you imported similar headers from the United States" and hopefully here's a picture of it http://img92.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cliffordmanifold8wp.jpg | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 67 | Sorry, meant to say, my engine is marked on my owners document as a 4700cc engine, assuming this is a 292?
