I'm building a 47 chevy pick-up rat rod,( V8,AUTO, POWER STEERING). I'm looking for a used steering column, (tilt prefered),non keyed, that will interchange with this truck. I want that kind-of old style look inside. I was wondering what type of steering column STOVEBOLTERS have used? Also, great forum, you all have been a big help.

I like to use the 67-72 chevy-gmc truck column. Also the early chevy van columns work well to.
look at my pics there is one of the truck cloumn I used.

I used the stock steering wheel and column in my 46 pickup. I also wanted the truck to look stock so I am keeping it all looking original. But it has a pacer front ifs that we mated to the stock steering column using universal joints. I made a custom floor panel so I could put the steering wheel in a coupler I made and welded to floor and would have plenty of clearance over the trans. If you want more details and some pictures then pm me. The dificulty of using the stock column depends on the engine used, front ifs, how the headers or manifolds exit out. That will make you then figure how your need to design your mounts and brackets.

I went with a ididit column in my 57 its chrome but they have steel so you can paint it any color. They have the indicators like a stock 60s car or truck. Plus their new and ready to go .

ididit is the only way to go you phone the company tell them what length you need and what options you want. Get it, bolt it in, your done.

The early chevy truck columns are a great choice where old looks are important but ther are getting hard to find. Chevy 30 series walk in vans used the same column up into the 80's and are a lot easier to find at a wrecking yard. Repair parts are the same as the early columns and can still be purchased at your local Chevy dealer at bargain prices. I picked up an automatic transmission version for 10 bucks, put in a new t/s switch and lower bearing and it was a done deal for under 50 bucks. Just for giggles give Idiot a call and price one up. Had a friend give me a column from a "67" chevelle (cut off at the bottom where the auto. lever was at). And picked up a column from a "69" chevy pick-up at a Louisville, KY. swap meet for $25.00. I'm sure 1 of these will work.

I used a mid 70's van tilt columm. It has no key in the column. I did remove the shifter, filled the hole and cut the column down 9". But it was what I had to work with.
