Has anyone rebuilt the gear/crank assy.on the window regulator? I have the part ordered . I'm assuming I need to grind off the 4 factory rivets and re rivet the new one on however are there any tricks/tips on getting the large spring off/on? With the minimum amount of bloodshed!! John. Thanks. By the way it's a 49 gmc
Its been several years since I messed with a regulator, but IIRC we used to clamp the assembly in a vise to maintain the spring pressure. Above all, BE CAREFULL! John
By the looks of it appears to have a fair amount of pressure. Just don't want it flying off into some vital body part in the process. I ll watch myself. Thanks
Johnny N: I did mine about 5 years ago and as per the other replies: clamp it in a vice, wear safety glasses, be careful. I can’t recall the details of fighting that spring other than that it wasn’t impossible: just used some small pry bars/screw drivers to leverage it off and back on. As for splitting the body apart you can drill out the rivets, and upon reassembly I used small machine screws and nylocs to hold it together. (See attached photo). Good luck, Dave
I second the glasses. Put on a face mask too. Teeth are expensive to replace. I have 2 implants now and a bridge. Stupidity doesn’t care how much something costs, put on your gear. I always ask myself before I’m about to grind, buff, zip, “Do you want to know what your kids will look like when they are grown up?” On goes the gear. It’s funny how my invincibility has disappear since my kids arrived. I wish they would have come sooner, I’d likely still have those teeth.... 😬
