I was wondering if anyone knows of a power steering box out of a late model chevy that would fit in the original location in my 1958 NAPCO 4x4? Or can the gear ratio be changed to make it easier to turn? Or is there a kit? If it helps the box is in the same place as the 2-wheel drive trucks.

Thanks

Michael

This is a tough one, My 57 NAPCO and the one other one I have driven steer really hard at low speeds (especially from a stop). I would try the NAPCO Users group. They have a link on the Links page. I would be intersted in what you find out, good luck.

That was a tough question. It's so specific, that someone wouldn't know without direct experience. Not trying to ignore you, but I simply don't know.

Jomichael, My '59 is not a napco, but was converted to 4wd by PO. It has a steering box, and drivetrain out of a '74 K10. The box is mounted outside the frame rail with some funky hardware but it works. My front axle is a Dana 44 so I'm sure it is diff. than yours, but the power steering is much appreciated when tring to turn the 33"s! I'm hoping to clean up the steering shaft and U joints in the linkage soon, perhaps with stuff from Flaming River, maybe they have something for you. Good Luck!!

the ez but expensive way is to find a 55-59 gmc 1/2 ton to 1ton truck with power steering and use that. it has a speacial saginaw box that will bolt to the three holes where the original steering gear bolted. On a chevy, the top of the frame may have to be cut out for clearence. These boxes are very hard to find, and you can expect to pay a lot of money if you are lucky enough to find one. the steering column needs to be changed as well. the column is coupled to the steering gear with a modern stile flex coupler.

Is The steering box in the same location as a 2 wheel drive? If it is I used a steering box off of a 77 chevy pickup 2 wheel drive. and mounted it on the out side of the frame and from there you could probably rig up something that would work for you. Have you checked to see if the power steering kits from like Chevy Duty for 99.00 bucks would fit?
