Discrete For a modern radio or cell phone charging.

Yes. I've been running this version of the one you posted Ron since '17. However I'm not using it to power the cigar lighter I use for cell phone charging. 6 volts is adequate, no need for 12 volts on phone chargers since they only require 5 volts to charge your phone.

I guess you know why I am asking. wink. I 'm told I don't need to convert and I don't want to go to the expense. I also was thinking of getting a Garman GPS and I would think they would need 12v.

mopar, do you use a phone charger out of a cigar lighter, or didi you install an accessory power outlet?

I ran the 10a version with no trouble what so ever. I wanted enough power in case I added a radio
DROK 10 amp
It powered a 12v relay (for isolation), a 12v tach, a power port that I would use for a Garmin and/or charge my cell phone plus it powered an inverter that ran a couple strings of Christmas lights.
Never had a problem with the trucks 6v system nor the added 12v circuits.
Remember to fuse everything for "just in case".

I installed a new outlet in the empty but pluged hole in the dash of the '51 and plug a phone charger into it. On that subject a paste/copy of my contribution to this thread from earlier this year below:

A couple years ago I stumbled across this replacement cigar lighter at Oreillys. It fit like it was made for the '51 and the black plastic cover does a good job of hiding the upgrade to the 6 volt truck. I carry a two port plugin charger and it works like a champ (phones only require about 5.5 volts to charge). One step I did take was to wire it to a constant hot so I didn't have to have the key on to charge. No pics but can throw one up if anyone is interested.

I like that mopar, thinking of using it to also work the other way by attaching my battery tender to float the charge on the battery over the winter too

Great idea on the charger. I have a small plug tied directly to the battery that lives outside the truck under the cab/running board. However I've toyed with getting a 12v Harbor Freight solar charger for a few bucks just to see how that would work. I'd have to monitor the battery to make sure it wasn't over charged but with a rated charge rate of 1.5 amps it's going to take a while to become a problem. Be a easy plug and see deal.

RonR,

Are you referring to this 12v, 1.5 WATT (not 1.5 AMP) solar charger?

Watts = Volts X Amps
1.5 Watts = 12v x 0.125 Amps

That would be 1.125 Amps

(I'll apologize in advance if my physics and/or math is incorrect.)

I like this 6v/12 AUTOMATIC trickle charger - no over-charging at a slightly higher price.

I have that H.F. solar charger (12 volt) I use on my 55' tractor. my 50' 3100 is 6 volt. My Question: Would this damage the battery if I used it. ? Right now I use a 6/12 volt plug in charger. The Solar one would be very convenient where I park my truck.

Tim, you’re right. Should have read 1.5 watts. Seems I can’t help those type typos, a proof read sometimes catches them, sometimes not. Thanks!

Shaffer, I’m thinking no harm as long as the battery has sufficient electrolyte. If I give it a shot I’ll keep a close eye on it, checking voltage and electrolyte and report the results.
