As is often the case, my 51 panel was a derelict and came with no keys. How's your experience been having a locksmith make keys? It's a panel truck so I need a key for the rear door too.

Easy for an old school locksmith. I made hundreds when I was in the aftermarket parts business.

If the keys don't all match, take the opportunity to have them all keyed to the same key. It is no big deal as mentioned for a good locksmith.

I took the code on the door lock to a locksmith. He cut me a key per the code and it worked perfectly.

If you're smart enough to take it apart, you darn well better be smart enough to put it back together.

There is a seller on eBay that sells keys by the key code stamped on the keys.

GM vehicles 1935-1966: " The key code will be a 4 - digit number that falls somewhere between 8000 - 9499"

Here is a post by Cletis with general information - RIP, Charlie (we remember you)

DADS50 posted a key "socket" (code on bottom "stem) - see attached image, below.
I think that I have some old keys with the code on the key.

Charlie also had a long chain-ring with sample keys ("try out keys" used by a key smith to try to find a matching key for a socket).

That thread that Tim linked is where I got the codes. The link that Walter posted has all the info. I saved those to PDF files. If someone wants them I'd be happy to post them here on Stovebolt.com (might be a good addition to tech tips). While working on them, I found a few duplicate code numbers that appeared to be transposed, so made corrections to those (hopefully, they're correct).

I just went through this on an ignition switch. The hardest part was finding a locksmith that had the hardware and the know how.

Fortunately, I found my 'old go to locksmith' and he came through for me. He will retired on October 1st and I'm not sure what I'll do about this old lock stuff in the future.

I removed the locking door handle and took it into the locksmith. The locksmith read the code on the door handle and made a key. Fortunately the code on the door handle matched the ignition and it works great.
