I've been offered a 60's Ford van for hauling it away. I thought that if it has a 9-inch rear it might be worth the trouble.

I don't know how to be sure what I'm looking at. Can anyone tell me how to identify a 9-inch and tell it from whatever else might be under an old van?

Early 60's, probably not late 60's, could be. The 9" is a removable carrier type rear, as is the 8". The two lowest nuts that hold the center section in can't be removed with a socket,on the 9 incher, you must use a box end wrench. On the 8 incher a socket will go straight on the nuts. They look alike so check before you haul it out. If it's an 8", leave it there

To Many to count.Im running a 64 9" in my 51 chevy pu.Have a lot of rearend play in the ring and pinion.One guy said if it don't make noise,it will be fine.Do ya know the clearance for the ring &pinion adj.My guess would be 3 to 5 thousand play. Is this correct????? thank you

Well I finally got a look under the van, and its definately NOT a 9-inch. So I declined the opportunity to drag it home...
