I am trying to take the tank out of my 53 I removed the seat, took the straps off and I took the filler neck hardware off. I tried to wiggle the tank a little to make sure I had it all and the tank is not budging at all. Is there something else I am missing?

When you put it back if you can't find pads get some used mountain bike tires and cut them to fit. Work perfectly.

Using old mountain bike tires? What a great idea, since I'm in the bicycle business.

I'm about to put the gas tank back in my 3600 and can't remember how it was assembled. I'm going to buy straps but they appear like there is only one attachment place at the end of the tank bracket. From what I've read here, it seems like the other side sits on the inside rail of the frame. Is this correct? Classic Chevy parts https://www.classicparts.com/basket.asp

Another gas tank strap related part that is available but,. I can't tell how it might be mounted.

Your url posted for gas tank brackets is for mounting the tank inside the cab behind the seat. It welds to the floor behind the seat riser. The longer strap goes around the back of the tank and bolts to the shorter strap.

Mountain bike tire pieces aren't too thick? I used some glass setting tape (strips of rubber for setting the window glass back inside the outer frames on the early AD door glass) I had left over and it worked great.

KlHansen, Thanks for clearing that up for me. Luckily mine is a stock inside the frame rails installation. Do you know how the tank is mounted this way? The mounting brackets only have one attachment hole and the straps appear to have only one point of attachment so, either the tank hangs just from these two holes (two mounting brackets) or also rest on the frame rails. I got this impression from the talk about using bike tube rubber as a cushion. I could find out by buying the straps and checking the fit but, I'm a little hesitant to layout 90 bucks for something I can easily fab. I was just wanting to get a clear understanding about how the stock tank was held in place.
Thanks
Joel

The Factory Assembly Manual shows brackets attached to the frame rail extending over the tank with the strap bolted to the bottom of the frame rail, extending under the tank and bolting with the threaded end to the inboard end of the brackets. It shows anti-squeak material glued to the inboard and outboard parts of the bracket where it contacts the tank. It's Section 8, Sheet 1.01 if you have the FAM.

I'm looking at sheet 1.01 3600 model very near to the front of the book but, don't see that good of detail. There must be another I'm not finding.

Go back to Section 8, Sheet 1.01. Sounds like you're at Section 0, Sheet 1.01, which is the "index" page.

Kevin,
Now I see how to use the assembly manual and, I can see how easy it will be to make my own straps.
Thanks for your help.
