I have just added power steering to my 52 3/4 ton pu using a kit from chevy duty, a steering box from a 76 chevy pu, and a late gm column. It all works great except for one problem. I do not have the turning radius I did with the old set up. In fact when I have the wheel turned all the way right or left it seems that the tires are bearly turned at all. What could be the problem? I used the pitman arm provided in the kit and have adjusted the adjustable drag, but no improvement. I had the front end aligned and on the machine the wheels turned an equal 25 degrees each way but out on the road the turning radius is terrible. Could the pitman arm be the wrong length? It steers and handles great except for the cournering issue. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Bill

It about has to be the pitman arm assuming the gear box is good working condition. You might try unhooking the pitman from the gear box and check the box by itself. It should be 5-7 turns lock to lock. How many turns of the wheel are you turning it when driving? Are you really spinning it to make a short turn? Joe

How much shorter is the pitman arm from the original? It must be too short for your application.

Bill-

One way to interpret your first message is that on the rack, your truck turns 25° in both directions, but that with the weight added, you're not getting this sort of turn. Am I overinterpreting your problem?

If not, could the steering gets hung up on something when the weight of the truck compressess the front end? I'm not sure what would/could do that!!
