Ok guys. I had some parts sent over from Jim Carters. The plugs sent were AC Delco M8 plugs with 1/4 inch reach. The points were Borg Warner A40V

The truck is a 1941 with the 0riginal 216 using the small 10mm plugs.

1. The plugs which were in the truck when I bought it were KLG T70 ( these have a 1/2 inch reach. These are obviously been in for a long time but the engine ran well with them. Are the M8 plugs ok.

2. The contact points send over are different from the existing ones. The top arm is the same however the base plate is much longer on the new points and there is no way that its going to fit. As a matter of interest I picked up a spare distributor from a wreck and the points are the same as the existing ones. Is this an Aussie difference or have the wrong parts been sent?

Thanks guys

Sounds like you have been sent the later points set .
The spark plug threads should be just the same lenght as the threads in the head .
Any longer , or shorter will result in hot spot that will cause pre ign / detonation or running on . Not too good for the old girl.

Consider the pertronix ign update ..........

Thanks Dusty. I'll measure the thread depth in the head. How have you found the pertronix set up in your 40? Still happy with it?

One other question...Which 10mm plugs are the other 41 - 46 guys using?

Cheers

The pertronix set has given perfect performance for me . I have done perhaps 7000 miles on it, so it is still fairly new.

Good to know Dusty. I'm waiting on a quote from the local Pertronix agent for the 1167 model plus coil. He should get back to me today. I'm averaging about 150 - 200 miles a week in the 41 with a big road trip planned for May.

Just to repeat an earlier question for the 41 -46 guys. Which 10mm plugs are you using?

Cheers

I was using M8's when I had the 216 in my truck. I have no idea why a 1950 engine had a 1946 head on it, but it ran fine that way.

Thanks Josiah,

The thread depth on my 216 is a half inch ( don't know if any others were set up this way ) The M8 plugs work fine when cold but then the engine starts to miss as it warms up. Any other guys using half inch reach plugs?

Cheers

Mozzie, the plugs that are in my 46 216 1/2 ton are AC 46. this truck has not been run or messed with since 1986. I do not know if these are the correct plugs or heat range for this 216 engine, but the engine seams to run fine with them in there. :p

Thanks Jamo,

I've a feeling that the AC46 plugs are the standard 14mm ones. Is that right? If so it may be that you have a later head on your 46. My truck has the small 10mm ones. I might have to look at 10mm motorcycle plugs and see if I can get some in the right heat range.

All the best

Bob
