Good day all. I have a 62 235 and was pocking around the starter and I found on the block just above the starter 2 bars on the block . they are not like the 261 bars as they are less defined and about 2 inches apart. Is this then norm or is it a flaw in the casting ???

Look for another set of captains bars on the other side of the block. That would indicate a 261

The best way to ID your engine is to tell us what the engine code is that's stamped on the machined surface next to the distributor...

oops right! block # is k3769716 ser # next to dist. is T- 666899 which matches the # on the I.D. plate inside the truck and the head is an 848 head .

there are no bars on the opposite side of the block. I have a 261 engine here and the bars on it look nothing like what I have on my existing engine.

I tried to post a picture , hope it comes through.

when used in the USA anyway
block casting 3769716 is a 235 truck 1958-62, or a car 1961-62 - almost always with head 3836848

but.... the serial number is not like i would expect
could it be that its a USA cast block that found it's way up into Canada and got a Canadian engine serial.
the serial number format in Canada has virtually no information about the engine, it can be just 6 numbers, or 1 - 2 letters followed by 6 numbers.

if you post a photo of the serial number stamping, i can let you know for sure
GM Canada vs GM USA use different fonts stamps on the blocks, so there is no question who stamped it
do your 6 and 9s curl their tails or are they straight?

The 6 and 9 s do curl their tails and the truck was sold originally in Canada .
The research I've done in the past suggests its a 235 , but I have't seen those bars on any other 235's , they too might be a Canadian thing , I will have to look more closely when I check out other 235 's at car shows .

Thanks John

makes sense, curly end 6, 9s is what the Canadian stamped numbers are like
i would be curious to know the engine color and the model ID tag info, because i haven't seen the T prefix before,
all my trucks engines are numbers only(replacement engine) , X or XC (on original engines).

model C3605 serial no. 2C3605616905B engine no. T-666899 and it's grey
On the tag it says made in Canada also a plate inside says a max gross weight of 7,800 lbs and an outside badge of C 30
My research suggests it was built in Baltimore and only the tag was made in Canada !!!!

What research has lead you to believe it was made in Baltimore?

Here's an example of 1962 Chevrolet US serial numbers;

2C365B100001

2 = year (1962)
C = Conventional Cab with gas engine
36 = Series (3/4 ton)
5 = Body type (Panel)
B = Baltimore
100001 = Unit number starting with 100001 at each plant.

Your model designation would be C3605S here in the US.

C = Conventional Cab with gas engine
36 = GVW classification (3/4 ton)
05 = Body (Panel)
S = 30 Series ordered with optional 7800 pound GVW

I can't help with the engine number other than to say it's not a US format.

The above info is the same info I had found leading to the Baltimore opinion. on the same sight I was lead to believe the T on the engine no. meant Tonawanda NY.
I suspect the parts were built in the USA. and assembled in Canada.
In the end I'm convinced its a Canadian 235 but those bars got me stumped if in fact they are bars and no blems from the casting procedure .
In the future I will be checking any stovebolts I see for similar markings .

Thanks John

OK, did a little more digging and found the US serial number break-down to be very close to the Canadian...here's your Canadian serial number break-down;

2 = year (1962)
C = Conventional Cab
36 = Series (3/4 ton)
05 = Body type (Panel)
6 = Cylinders (4, 6 or 8)
16905 = Unit number starting with 00001
B = GVW (6,001 - 10,000 pounds)

Absent of a "plant" identifier it would seem that there was only one plant building trucks in Canada at that time.

Those are definitely not captains bars like any which I have seen on either 235 with powerglide nor on 261s.
It should be noted that I have not seen all of them. smile

Well I guess I'll go with the notion that they mean nothing. Truck still runs , that's all that counts.
Hope to see in Winchester VA.

John
