For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 85 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 85 | Have a 52 Chevy 3100 pickup w/ 4 speed tranny. Has new pressure plate, clutch, & throw-out bearing. After messing with the clutch adjustment, I heard a clunking noise then shifting into 2nd gear but no other gear (engine was off). It would freely shift out of 2nd, but every time shifted back in - "clunk". Rats, after starting engine I shifted into reverse - worked fine. Then went into 2nd, heard clunk. Now it is stuck in 2nd & can't get it out. Did I mess the clutch up? Any help would be appreciated soon, as I am to sell the truck in 2 days & I was just trying to tweak stuff prior to it's sell. Thanks. Bob | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 | Did you take the shifter off of the top of the transmission? If so maybe not aligned right when you put it back.

I'm starting to think it may be in the tranny? | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | Perhaps a broken spring that keeps whichever shift rail in gear. I’d remove the shift lever (not the whole top yet) and see how it looks in there, even use a big screwdriver and work each shift rail forward and back to see how they feel. Might help to jack up one wheel and have someone slowly turn a wheel while you fiddle with the transmission. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 85 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 85 | Yea folks, thanks for the help. It did end up being the shift level. The end had worn down to the point of getting caught between two gears. I had end welded to build it up, then shaped on the grinder - it now works great. Bob
I sure appreciate this forum - and your helping a rookie when it comes to trannys.. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,868 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,868 | I hope you also re-tempered the end of the shift lever after welding and reshaping it. If you left it soft, it's going to be a short-life fix. That stub end of the shifter is harder than woodpecker lips from the factory! Jerry
