We know that brake rotors are lot thinner than drums, so I assume converting to a disc brake reduced the width of axles, front or rear. The reason I am asking is I am thinking about swapping my stock HO52 to a 14 bolt out of a one ton van which is about couple of inches wider on each side. The 14 bolt has drums so I am thinking if I swap the 14 bolt to disc brakes, I will be very close to my stock drum HO52?! Am I missing something?

Rotors are either mounted to or are part of a hub which has bearings that are supported on the spindle. The wheel is subsequently mounted to the outside of the hub. To determine the overall width you would need to measure the outside dimension of the hubs on the current axle and the proposed replacement. There can be a lot of variables depending on fender clearances, wheel width, and offset.

The common term used is WMS, Wheel Mounting Surface. you will need to measure WMS to WMS on both axles and compare. There is a post pinned to the top of the Tons o' fun page that has A LOT of good info on the 14 bolt swap. It will take an hour or so to read...
