I recently hauled home an orphan 1960 C10. The engine serial number looks kind of odd to me.

In the following picture are the I’s read as 1’s?

The casting marks indicate the date. Looks like conveyor #4 and cast on
L=December
19 = 19th day
9 = year but I’m uncertain about what engine you have because of the location of the serial number FI22IJC (both are i). If there is no road draft tube and the fuel pump is to the rear of the engine perch, then I’d guess you have a December 19, 1969 292ci engine.

Is this the correct S/N for a 1960 235 c.i.?

1960 might have had a 235. Your date code L199 might indicate 1959 casting date. But it could be any replacement motor. Show us some more pictures.
Your valve cover have 4 fasteners?

Thanks Hambone, it does have 4 screw fasteners on the valve cover. Pretty sure this is a 1960 235. Will need to get to WallyWorld do more engine degreaser to find the block casting numbers. Have gone through 3 cans of degreaser just to uncover what I have found so far.

How to read the engine serial numbers? Read where the suffix JC indicates 1960-1963 engines.

that is the head #. The engine block # will be down by the distributor. xxx848 is desired. Google chevy 6 cylinder engine identification and you will find a number of resources.
