Was thumbing through a Truck Mag at the local Wally World recently and noticed an aftermarket company now offers a complete all metal cab for the TF and AD trucks. I knew these were available in the Chevy and Ford worlds....Camaro and Mustangs to be exact but not in our arena.
It virtually takes the charm and self satisfaction out taking 60+ year old sheet metal and making something out of it.
Pricey...but for those who have deep pockets...although it would very tempting if you were building a Barret Jackson or Ridler custom show truck.
These cabs must have tight tolerances and where did they acquire NEW stamping dies stateside?. I was always under the impression the original dies were long expired. Wasn't that always an issue...lack of factory correct crisp lines from worn out dies...with outsourced body panels we currently are purchasing we have to dolly them to death to fit.
I suppose if it were easy...everyone would be doing it.

Classic MUscle: 1947-50 pickup cab and doors

$11,500 (plus $250 shipping - no, that $250 is for the crate)?

No indication if for 47-48 or 1949-1950 gas tank.
I have contacted the seller. They will get back to me tomorrow.

Different companies have been making the AD & TF cabs for about 10 years. The sheet metal is stamped "off shore" and is the same metal you buy from all the vendors. The sheet metal is just welded together around a jig here in the USA. If you have to pay someone to repair rust in your original cab it doesn't take long to get to the cost of a new cab with doors swinging.

You can eliminate the middle man there & buy direct from "Premier" & save yourself a bundle.

Premier Street Rods makes them. They are about 8K. If you search you tube they have a video of them making an AD cab with doors. They do not make a 3 window but will patch in the windows on the outside. They take about 5 weeks. They will put in a recessed firewall in.

Dynacorn International LLC is who makes the sheet metal that all the vendors sell.

The latest company to be welding the truck cabs together is 'Premier Street Rods', Lake Havasu City, AZ. premierstreetrod.com

Premier does Not get their 1947-1953 sheet metal from Dynacorn.... They get that from K.C. Smith Group in Phoenix AZ.

I wouldn't say ALL. A fair number of parts I've gotten were Tri-Plus branded - Made in Tiawan.

From your link: "KC SMITH GROUP INC Distributor of classic restoration Chevrolet and GMC Truck parts and accessories for years 1939-present"
It doesn't say "Manufacturer"

I don't think Dynacorn does much manufacturing either. The get their stuff from overseas suppliers.

FWIW

I never said K.C. Smith was the Manufacturer.... they only import the individual component sheet metal panels & send it to Premier where they put it all together as a complete cab.

If you read further you will see that " Mirota Company." in Taipei Taiwan is the manufacturer.

https://www.importgenius.com/importers/kc-smith-group-inc

https://panjiva.com/Kc-Smith-Group-Inc/18775456

If the sheet metal for the cabs was manufactured here in the States.... the complete cabs would cost over $15,000.

We have not done a Dynacorn AD but did do their 69 Camaro. The usual tweaks were required when mating factory and reproduction parts but would rate less man hours of labor over one from the rust belt. Not cheap with the out the door price in the 45-50k range. Have a 54 3100 hood in the shop right now with a repo hood that was a bit pricey and has taken major tweaking for the hood to fender gap and a lot of trimming and fitting to get the hood latch panel to fit the hood. Hood was at least a half inch too wide at the rear to cowl so rear had to be sucked in (not equally on both sides) and brace modified. This is a show truck with near perfect gaps so for a normal street truck the fit would be OK out of the box.

I have seen the cabs & they would never be able to get $8000 for them if they were junk.

Most of their cab clientele are guys that are building high end heavily modified street rods with high tech custom made frames & suspensions.

I hear that the Premiere shop is running 16 hours a day making the cabs.

The price on the cabs may be out of reach for everyday restorer, but the guys that are building $150,000 street rods are buying up these cabs faster than Premier can make 'em.

I don't think a lot of people are building $150,000 Truck street rods. I don't think they are selling like hot cakes. It's all hype put out by these sellers. We don't know how many they are selling unless they tell you. You don't get honest figures.
You can still buy a good donor cab and get all the dash, glass, mechanisms, pedals, seats, doors and etc. with it and get it shipped to you if needed.

These guys are just buying the same patch panels we can buy and building a "Jig". Which is no big deal for parts that "fit" together. A jig does no good if parts need tweaked. It's just a holding fixture with features that allow for movement to get a reasonable cab. A jig is what the factory had with USA parts. They were just slightly better than the Chinese parts. The allowable gaps and tolerance was big. How many buyers are there for these trucks when completed? A huge waste of money to buy a $8k-$12K cab. A few are built on consignment paid for by people playing baseball for $160 million.
I can buy a real nice truck for $8-$12K. A WHOLE running and driving nice truck. I can call it a street rod if I want to.

Lot's of vendors and "distributors"...........one "Peoples Old Truck Parts Factory".

Let’s please keep this conversation civil. Everyone is entitled to post the facts as they know it. It’s a plain and simple fact that cabs are being reproduced.

Thank you, Martin

bartamos, it might have been better/corrector to post/understand that some people have more money than time/patience (and, can afford to forego the "joys"/satisfaction of doing it themselves)? cool

Edited. the post is not aimed at the posters/members. Was meant for the sales hype of the cab builders. I assume everyone is also allowed to post their opinion on these cabs and the fact they are not worth the money and are nothing special. I have enough experience to give my opinion. No offence to anyone that has an opposite opinion. If no one wants another opinion on built cabs, feel free to delete back to and including my first post. I will not be offended. It was meant as commentary on a subject in "General Talk".

Sometime back, I recall a website where someone could buy a new truck that was entirely modern performance, but it had an Advanced Design body. Nothing original or antique about it, all new parts. At the time, they had only made two or three of them.

I remember that too. About 10-12 years ago or so. I think they called their truck the Southern 358, or something like that. The pictures I saw showed the truck with a 47-48 Chevy car grille. They couldn't call it a Chevy due to trademark or copyright laws. GM wanted nothing to do with it, as i recall, and the developers put Ford drive trains in the first ones built. At that time the advertised price was 68K, or so.

Here is a shot of what's needed to get a "show" fit from a 1954 repop hood. One has to consider that it's a reproduction hood being mated to a reproduction grill. There is very bad sheet metal such as a no name supplier of Model A fenders out of Houston, Texas to the quite good sheet metal parts from Brookville for the same car. We've done them all and I believe a few extra bucks for quality save on the final bill. As far as price it seems some fortunate ones can put 100k out like we regular folks can part with a Ben Franklin. We did a $260k 40 Ford coupe that was a Great Eight Car at the Ridler Awards and after winning a number of trophies it now sits gathering dust.

Left front corner split, massaged to fit, re-welded.

Rear had brace removed, metal shrunk to fit, brace shortened and replaced.

About 10 years a company was going to make an all-new 54 truck it was all over the Stovebolt. It was to be $50,000 the 55, the 61, then it disappeared. The company was on the southern east coast. I thought the price was terrible but I have almost that much in my 54.Here it is, thanks to another post.
