Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 24 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 24 | i was thinking on changing IFS on my 66 1/2 ton chevy truck.the only thing is i hear if i do this change the front wheels will stick out 1 inch or so.so if this is correct.then what is the IFS Measurement on the(67-72).IFS(73-78).IFS(79-84).?85-87 did they all stay the same with in the 5 years i think the 62-66 truck owners who are considering the IFS BOLT ON . need to get a tape mearsure out.and hit the boneyards and see if the IFS "on the years i listed^ are all the same or different.my truck is a short wheel base stepside and i sure don't whant it to look three wheeler turn backwards. if you want to join in finding out the measurements pick a year example >67-72.(73-78).79-84-?-87.i'll measure 79-84 and see what i come up with my buddy has a 84 1/2 ton truck .they should be the same 79-84 ?87.i''l measure and post it as 79-84?87 my brother has a 87 1/2 ton.or if anybody has done IFS swap there self and not here say.let me know how it fit.

 hopefully you took pictures of the interchange. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 24 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 24 | i also have factory wheels i don't want to go to other wheels to make the front end look like the IFS is the same as the orginal IFS.i for got to add thatin my meesage. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2000 Posts: 81 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2000 Posts: 81 | I just bought a frontend from what is believed to be out of a 73-78. It's for a 66 4wd Suburban. I'll let you know the measurements later today. On the phone with guy it sounded like everything was going to be close. Of course you're talkin 2wd and I'm talkin 4wd

I'm going to change out the rotors, pads and brake lines anyway, I'll look into the chances of upgrading to 6 lug rotor. If that can't be done I'll take a set of new rotors to my machinist and see what he can do. Having front disc brakes is worth a small amount of trouble. I saved a bundle upfront on this axle, if I end up spending more it will be spread out over time.

I used the entire crossmember from a '73 1/2 ton Suburban. The wheels don't stick out any further now than they did before. Save yourself the trouble of taking a bunch of measurements. The conversion is well worth the effort.

It turned out to be a six lug after all! It's not a 73' it's more like an 85'. It looks to measure out the same as my 66' front axle. It certainly is complete enough. Leaf springs and shocks still attached, and the arm that attaches to my pitman arm on my power steering is there. Yeah, I know, don't bother using the shocks, and the rotors need to be turned, and new pads etc. I'm going to install it this weekend I hope. Oh yeah, the 66' measured about 60" backing plate to backing plate, and the 85' measured 61" It's hard to get an accurate reading with the front end still under the 66'. Hope this helps some what
