I hope I post this in the correct area, I never know if door handles belong to body, inside, or...
In my '57 Suburban, for several months now, when I open the driver door from the inside, the handle does not go back to its "rest" position. As a result, the door does not latch when I close it, I have to push the inside handle forward to its place. Also, lately, it is getting harder to push the handle back in place, and I worry the issue is just getting worse. I have also noticed that there is more and more play in the shaft of the inside handle.
The outside handle works just fine.
Before I take stuff apart, can someone help and tell me what is going on, how to fix...? I drive my truck several times a week and would like to avoid being stuck with the door mechanism apart, not knowing what to do next...

I'd suggest you take off the door panel and have a look see.
Report back on what you find.

as Darcy said, take the door panel off, the "door control" that the inside door handle fits on is a pretty simple device and has a spring in it. I bet that spring is broken. You can take the door panel off in probably 10-15 minutes and back together in the same amount of time. You will probably end up just buying the door control and a new door handle (splines in the door handle can wear, I like to replace the handle when I replace the remote, unless it is perfect inside. 69Cudan thanks for the link for that part, I would even have known how it is called, let alone find it. I know about the spline wearing out inside the handle, so much so that I have had a pair of vice-grip instead of the handle for a couple of years now! At first, it was as a quick fix during a road trip, but I now find it quite fun to have this vice-grip there, and it reminds me of that trip!
