Anyone know the approximate weight of a 1953 GMC 250, and what size wheels would come stock on it? What is the ton rating for a 250? Thanks in advance. JP
Hy Jon Patton, we would need more information to give you anything more than an educated guess, too many variables. G.V.W. would be around 8000 lbs.,cab and chassis approximately 3400 lbs., panel truck 4200lbs., so I would guess the weight would be somewhere between those two numbers, hope that helps.
Yeah I don't have the vin number. Hood on the truck has a 250 emblem (and looks to be the original hood), duals on the rear make it at least a 1 ton. Owner thinks it's rated at 1 1/2 ton. He is supposed to get me the tire size. He says he has a set of tubeless wheels that go with the truck (split rims are on the truck). 20 inch wheels should tell me that it's bigger than a 1 ton. I have a GMC 250, it’s a one ton. If the wheels are 20” I’d say that the truck isn’t a 250. At this point the hood could’ve been changed 50 or 60 years ago and hard to tell if original. The above suggestion– check out oldgmctrucks website. Doesn’t take anything away from the Stovebolt but specializes in exactly these heavier gmcs. It’s a slow forum but lots of good info
Oldgmctrucks have a stand alone information website too with lots of information. With my Canadian 1 Ton, the GVW is stamped on a plate on the driver's door pillar.
I went on oldgmctrucks.com last night, registered and got some of the same answers that I got here. I'm told that the pickups will have 17" wheels, 1 tons 18", and anything bigger 20". All I've seen of the truck is pictures in the ad. It's about a 5hr drive from me. Thanks to all! JP
