on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 61 Member | | Member Joined: May 2001 Posts: 61 | I want to install a new gas tank for my 1950 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup. I do not want to place it in the cab. What is a good alternative site on the truck? What gas tank should I buy? Any suggestions?

I suspect a good donor would be a **** Ranger or van which have long skinny tanks that fit well under the bed. A Jeep CJ or YJ tank (or two) would work well too since they are easy to get ahold of and they fit between the frame rails. You can get them in aftermarket high capacity versions in metal or plastic.

The tank kit mounted to the rear frame crossmember.
The kit was made by TANKS, INC., Box 400, Clearwater, MN 55320

Besides the obvious if there ever was an explosion. But i would think it would be safer in the cab where it is protected? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 | PJ,
Saw pictures of a mid-50's Fjord with the gas tank in the cab, that had been rear-ended on I-5 south of Seattle. Pushed the bed into the cab, crushed the tank, rubber connector on filler neck came off. Two people dead.

Best location is behind the rear axle as high in the frame as you can get it. You can run along the frame like the mid 80's Chevy truck.
