on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 61 Member | | Member Joined: May 2001 Posts: 61 | I am installing a 350 in my 50 Chevy. I am rebuilding it and have the option to change the cam. Any suggestions? I will use the truck mostly for in and around town. I plan to put very few long distance miles on it. Occasionally I will take it out on the hiway. I was thinking of getting the Edelbrock EDL-7102 with a 234 Int and 244 exh and match it to their performance manifold. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2000 Posts: 962 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2000 Posts: 962 | Need to know the rest of the setup to suggest a good cam. What is your compression ratio? What size carb in CFM? Single or dual-plane intake? What tranny? Stall speed? What rear gear ratio? Desired powerband in RPM? Smooth or Choppy idle? Vehicle weight?
A 234/244 at .050" is gonna have a fairly choppy idle at about 800-1,000 RPM. You'd need at least 9:1 compresson to get good performance at lower RPMs.
good luck

JMO, rpm cam would not work well for you. 1500-6500rpm range, not as much HP/TQ in low and midrange as other similar cams, comes on like gangbusters in high-end. needs high-perf heads, gears, headers, converter, not recommended for heavy vehicles. it would be the worst engine mistake you could make. my friend has a '91 half-ton, with ZZ4 short-block, 8.9cr, edelbrock rpm heads/cam/intake/600carb, gears, headers, exhaust. from the way this heavy truck moves, i knows he's very disappointed. with stock heads, low compression ratio, edelbrock PERFORMER intake, 600 carb or OEM QuadraJet, you'd probably like a "4 by 4" cam, 600-4600rpm range, 206-214*D(250-258*D)/.432-.453Lift/111*LSA. but i would not recommend the performer cam, either. choose any other manufacturer, except that one.

They build cylinder pressure in low CR engines to make good grunt and mid-range. Still need the engine specs to make a really good choice.

Actually, this boy has become more educated. I found out that if I go higher than a 210 duration I will need to change torque converters in my tranny and possibly redo the heads. So, I am stuck (maybe a blessing) using a 210. What type intake manifold, carb, and exhaust pipes should I consider? Thanks! | | | | | Joined: Sep 2002 Posts: 72 Member | | Member Joined: Sep 2002 Posts: 72 | howziit Richie! we ALL gain knowledge, from almost every topic we read into! JMO, go with the tried and true: from the stock, rebuilt 350, with OEM QJet, you could add: OEM HEI distributor OEM thermal clutch fan Crane adjustable vacuum diaphragm kit,w/springs$23) 1 5/8" headers(standard size) edelbrock PERFORMER, or WEIAND#8007 intake small cam heyyy, that's all you might need!
