I have a steering column out of my 1940 1/2 ton panel I thought was original.Needing to put new bushings in,the parts breakdown from Chevs of the 40's shows 2 bushings on the pitman.Mine only has 1 and it was not even near the end of the shaft. The last 2 in of the box nearer the pitman arm is not even machined for a bushing. It had a metal shim there.I can tell Somebody has been in the steering box before. Here are the # on the steering box Saginaw Gear 263587.Im probably going to have someone machine a bushing for it.Also the pitman arm was only haif on the splines, is this correct? Thanks for any help.

Hi Tim:
I see this post is quite old, but I am curious if and how you solved your problem. My '38 half ton has the same gear box and I have it at the machine shop now with the same puzzle you had. I found a NOS pitman arm kit that had two bushings and the split bushing. Near as I can tell from a note in the Master Parts Catalog, there was a problem with chattering and the new kit solves the problem in this particular 37-40 box.
Cheers,
Mark

The OP has not been on the site in over 3 years. Hopefully someone else can answer your question.
