I've not been able to find a 41-46 steering box yet to replace the 39-40 box that's in my truck. I noticed JC has the worm shaft gear with the recirculating balls for sale. Do you know if the 39-40 box will accommodate the 41-46 worm shaft, without any other modifications? I read the boxes are the same, but want to check with you guys before shelling out the dough.
Thanks.

I have rebuilt many of these boxes, and I see no way to accomplish that.

I am just about to go thru this exercise.

I want the easier gearing of the '46 box.

1st thing I see is the mast is too long ....................

I did see some one has done this , but I cannot recall the forum he was on .

Still looking .

Thanks for your help Dave.
Guess Dusty and I will still be looking for a 42-46 box.

A '41 gear box is the same design as the '42-'46, the recirculating ball diameter is different as well as the number of balls so not all parts interchange from '41 to the '42-'46. The recirculating ball assembly will not fit other year steering boxes.

The gear box itself is the same for all truck sizes except the COE, just the shaft length changes.

A good welder can shorten the shaft by removing a section, and I suppose a good machinist could cut a new threaded end.

I grafted a '37 end to a '41 gear box so I could use all '37 parts inside the cab. I cut and welded the two shafts.

One thing to look for on used boxes is the lower tapered bearing race on the worm shaft, it is not replaceable. If water gets in the gear box, it sets on the lower bearing.
