I am installing a engine I purchased that has been rebuilt and runs well. The seller wanted to go to a V8 in his Malibu. The engine codes are as follows.
Block numbers: 3850817 - 230 - 250 CID
Head Casting numbers: 3824437 - 230 CID
Engine stamped: F0909LK I assume this means Flint/Sept/9th. I am having difficulty with the LK. I believe it is out of a car, with manual transmission.
Also stamped was CON 2. H233. Is this a 1963 engine?
Any clarification is appreciated. I did not ask the seller if the engine was original to the car when I purchased it.
Since the only difference in a 230 and a 250 is the stroke, the only 100% sure way to tell what you've got is to figure out a way to measure it without pulling the cylinder head. As you've discovered, the block castings are the same for both engines. A little creative probing down a spark plug hole with a thin, flexible tape measure might be a possibility. The 230 has a 3.250" stroke, while the 250 stroke is 3.531, so there's a little over a 1/4" difference. Somebody might be able to decipher the stamped number behind the distributor for you, if there is one there. Jerry

Thanks.
Revisit your "LK" Suffix code on the engine serial number...could the "LK" really be "LR"? If so, it's a 1964 230 w/3-speed manual transmission.
H233 is the Cast date code...Aug 23, 1963 which would be about right for a Sept 9th build for a new 1964 model year application.
Thanks for the information Mike, it is greatly appreciated.
The Suffix code is definitely "LK". I will try to attach a picture, but I am a new member, but will give it a try.
The engine came out of a station wagon. I wonder if that matters. Either way, the engine is going into my 1965 C10, as I do not have the original engine.
