Shifting from 2 to 3 the rod does not go all the way into 3rd. At the transmission the 2nd 3rd rod buts up against the reverse, first plate that holds the 1st, reverse rod. The transmission will go into reverse first and 2nd. The "key" is where the bolt goes through. If I remember correctly, we bent the rod very slightly to get the rod to clear. After that Jim’s truck shifted great.

Both levers should be facing outward, with the bolt to the inside. If the installer turned one or both around it could be the cause of the problem. The correct side cover should have the short shaft to the front with the long shaft to the rear. Both levers should point down and slightly forward and facing outward. If everything looks OK it could be a simple adjustment of the rods.
