when the motor was rebuilt, the rebuilder tapped the crank and added a big [censored] bolt and washer to help secure the harmonic balancer. i need the low clearance water pump and the fan is now hitting the balancer bolt.
my understanding is that the harmonic balancer is pressed on and this bolt was added as a back up should the balancer come loose. so do i even need this bolt?
if i do need it, i only have 2" of clearance between the water pump and the rad. is there a electric fan that i can use? if so, can it be mounted in front of the rad?
thanks. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 | Use a flat-head Allen bolt with a tapered head in the crankshaft and taper the hole in the washer. It will eliminate the bolt head sticking out. A better fix is to use Pre-68 Dave's water pump relocation plate that adapts the 216-style water pump to the later engine, raises the fan about 3 inches, and also centers the fan on the radiator for proper cooling. Electric fans are a solution to a nonexistent problem when the right fix is simple, easy, and much more effective. Jerry

if that moves the fan enough to insert the bolt, great but...if it dosen't, do i need to figure a way to make it work like jerry suggested or can i live without it?

Your builder installed the bolt for a reason. I had a pressed on balancer come off at high rpm once, it was not pretty. Can you picture a balancer shaped hole in the side of an early corvette? Use Jerry's suggestion. | | |
