I have a reprint of a 1946 Chevy truck owners manuel (do you have that one?) and it shows in a picture on page 11 that there is a return spring for the linkage connected to the frame. Does your pedal pop up good and strong? 'Cause I rebuilt mine and it's kinda weak. john. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2000 Posts: 390 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2000 Posts: 390 | John,ive got an original 1942 shop manual.I checked again in section 5,hydraulic brake repair, and can find no mention of a return spring.I even looked at mine again and there is no external spring or any place i can see where one should be.The cluch pedal has a hook on it for a spring but not the brake pedal.Mine returns freely and strong all the way up. Ron.

I was thinking about inprovising and adding a spring from the clevis pin to the frame (or the splash pan). This pic was taken from the little 55 page owners manuel for 1946 trucks (not the shop manuel). [img] http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/378428/brake_pic.JPG[/img] | | | | | Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 784 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 784 | Mine has a spring from the clevis pin and hooks to the splash pan close to where the spring for the clutch pedal is. There isn't an eye on my pedal as shown in the picture that John posted. The clevis pin is a little bit long, just enough to hook the spring to. The spring has a piece of heavy wire hooked to it as an extension.
I think you should have some kind of return spring just to make sure that you aren't dragging your brakes. In some cases just the weight of the pedal can cause the brakes to drag just a bit. Better safe than sorry.
