Quick question.....

I am installing a 1976 350 Chevy engine into my 1950 1/2 ton Chevy pick-up. I am installing the distributor into the rebuilt engine. I have set the engine to TDC. However, I do not know (do I see where it is marked of the distributor) which pin on the HEI distributor is #1. Which one is it? Also, what are the wire locations for the other cylinders? Thanks!

Easiest way to figure it out:

Remove valve cover on odd cyl bank, (think its the driver's side). Rotate motor until valves on #1 cyl are closed. Line timing mark up with 10 degrees BTDC. Remove distributor cap and note where rotor is. Rotate distributor body until rotor is just about to line up with a cap terminal (doesn't matter which one, cuz the dist was removed). This is your new #1 plug. Should be first cyl on driver's side. Since a chevy's distributor turns clockwise, go CW from there
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Then when she fires, she'll run decent because timing will already be somewhere around 10 degrees BTDC.

good luck

Whoah, hold on. New camshaft? Rebuild? Did you do the pre-lube before you installed the distributor? Its a must.

You can wire the HEI any way you want as long as the engine is on top dead center, #1 piston, with valves closed. Just figure out where you want #1 plug wire to be, then drop distbutor in so rotor is pointing at that spot. Then wire according to the firing order. Most have the rotor pointing at #1 cylinder, but it doesn't really matter. Joe

I forgot to say to Chiphead that I indeed prelubed all parts. I plan to use a drill to prime the oil pump and ensure that I am getting good oil flow too.
