My 53 Chevy 1/2 ton has a torque tube with the universal joints incased in a ball type housing. ..How much oil do I put in the hole which is in the tail shaft of the tranny ?
This hole takes the small plug with the peg on it...…...thanks

The service manual says 1/2 pint.

Sorry just realized the search engine took me to the car manual, not the truck manual. Here's a link to the truck manual which just says "fill housing with transmission fluid" for the 1/2 ton trucks, but says 1 pint for 3/4 ton trucks.

Greg...in that article on page 4-52 it states to remove the Speedo drive gear and fill with tranny lubricant. DOES THIS MEAN TO FILL THRU THE SPEEDO DRIVE OPENING HOLE ???

If I read the instructions correctly on page 4-53,it would need one pint. ....

In transmission section 7-4,paragraph 6, it states to fill the universal joint thru the pipe plug opening ...but which plug opening, the one on the tail shaft which is called the (bearing support retainer plug) or does it mean the main tranny fill plug in the mid - section of the tranny case ???
It does state that the main tranny takes 1 1/2 pints

There is a filler plug/hole on the upper passenger side of the SM420 transmission.

The instructions above say to fill to the plug hole.
Other instructions might say: when cold/cool, fill a little below the plug hole (the oil expands when warm).

As posted above, the enclosed drive-shaft transmission u-joint is filled from the transmission.
