It has a 261cc engines and four speed manual transmission. The original color of the engine was yellow. I was wondering what color the transmissions were? I am cleaning up the transmission now and do not find any color residuals on the cast iron. One inspection plate has black on it. I have uploaded a photo of the transmission. I didn't know Chevy ever made an engine that small! I don't believe transmissions and/or rear ends were painted before they left the factory. LOL! Jerry

When I rebuild the sm420, I paint them cast iron color so they dont rust. 1953 Chevrolet 3100261 cu inch, sm420, 3.55 rear, torque tube still, omaha orange, still 6 volt, RPO green glass, side carrier spare, all done In the DITY GalleryVideo of the 261 running1964 GMC 1000305 Big Block V6, sm420, the next cab off restoration
