Still thinkin about it. Am I crazy? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 272 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 272 | Hello all, Seriously looking for an IFS here. What are the possible disadvantages of a bolt it? Have you seen these before? http://www.rbsauto.com/NewProducts/1R417.html Thanks, Sean | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 | Have you driven the solid front axle with mono leafs and good gas shocks? A pretty decent ride IMO. It seems like a lotta money to spend.

There are several sites on this swap on the web. Probably a lot cheaper than their IFS, and it is designed for truck use. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 662 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 662 | I just pulled the front suspension intact from my daughter's Corvair. Six 3/8" bolts and it's out. Granted it's only 1000 lbs or so on the front end, but it makes me think bolt-in is a definite possibilty. I believe the K members (with suspension and powertrain) on most new cars bolt in. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 68 Member | | Member Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 68 | I've got a straight axle and mono's on mine. Not bad, IMO.

Swapping a Corvair front end was very popular in the hot rod scene in the 70's. I have not paid for it all because I just dropped the truck off today. He is also doing the motor mounts which will be an addition but I am excied now that I have made a decision. I will update when I pick it up this week. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 272 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 272 | 540 DOLLARS????? no way... the welds were done and now he is asking for more money? (nearly double?) I did not even have the motor mounts welded in. Has anyone else had this happen with welding work? It is kinda hard to have him remove it. I told him i would not pay and he removed the material cost and dropped of 100 dollars. The welds looked ok there were several little bubble holes in it though and lots of splashed flux. The other part that really gets me is that I took the frame to them and it was painted. When I got it back it looked like they had dragged it all over the lot. Both the top and the bottom had been draged and the rear spring mounts were ground flat. My paint job probably was not the show quality this guy is used to but he really messed it up after i spent a long time doin it. I am pretty upset. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 132 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 132 | "splashed flux"? stick welded? in this day and age!?!?! not that there's anything wrong with it...
yeah, io think i'd be [censored], too.

They probably put the frame upside down to weld it on the bottom. Still, dragging damage doesn't sound very nice. But, you should be able to touch it up pretty easy.
