I have a 1951 gmc 3/4 ton pickup. I would like to know if there should be a cardboard liner, similar to the head liner, that goes behind the seat? I am thinking of installing a sound barrier in this area but am concerned about the aluminum facing showing.

I have a 51 3100. I put sound deadner behind my seat and once the seat is in place, you can’t see anything, but again, I keep my seat all the way back.

There is no cardboard liner that goes behind the seat. If you still have the gas tank behind your seat, about the best you can do is apply the sound barrier/dampener under it and behind it. That's what I opted to to. Seems to help with the sound. If you also apply it the inside of the doors, under your seat, under the floor mat and the underside of your roof, will notice a big difference. Of course the headliner needs to be out to do that. Hope this helps you with your project.

There was in my 5 window Steve. It actually attaches to the back of the seat (it was maroon too)and makes it so you cant see the seat back springs though the quarter windows, dont think regular cabs had that though.

You welcome friend, it might of been part of the deluxe cab option for the 5 windows, not a lot has been written on it, notice Jim Carter Trucks makes a repro panel though.

Brad, I am sure that speak for all of us, thank you for pictures and film strips. They are a very valuable resource for us all. Now, isn't that attached to the back of the seat frame? I think the original post by bobbynudd, was thinking there was one that attached to the cab, above the gas tank, but below the back window. I am guessing, something like the roof panels. That way he could extend his sound dampener up farther. He was interested in not showing. Perhaps I am clear off base here. Maybe he will chime back in and clarify it for us. Not being one of cool kids with a 5 window, I didn't even know that a panel like that existed.

There is nothing I am aware of attached to the cab itself. After some models of truck production switched to tanks in the cab, the area (early ‘49 running change) in the corner was left open, uncovered. Perhaps he is thinking of the early cabs which were enclosed in these metal panels?

Does any know if there was something behind the seat on a 37 1/2 ton? There is a bracket with mounting holes right in the middle of the cab. I assume there was something there. Thanks for any help you can give me. Bill

My truck has the same part described. The previous owner hadn’t done much, if anything obvious to the cab interior and I don’t recall seeing any clues to anything, even insulation other than as you found already. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this. I know I left the area on my truck as I found it, other than treating the surface rust.

46 Sparky, I have decided to Put a piece of 18 gauge metal across the back along with paint and sound deading material. Just thought as I am doing a frame off resto I might as well finish the back of cab also. Thanks

I did something similar on my ‘46. I used a fiber board similar to Masonite instead of metal, only because that was what I had on hand.

I just hope I can get all the holes lined up. Made a cardboard pattern. Especially using the clutch head screws

I made a template and plotted “register” marks to align the holes. In hindsight, it was not worth the effort since I could have drilled new holes thru the fiberboard anywhere along the vertical straight line of the bracket and it would not have mattered. None of the work shows once the seat back is installed anyway. Just be careful to not miss the bracket and drill into the rear cab wall.
