For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 117 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 117 | I have a '57 1/2 ton. It currently has a 265 (mystery motor) and I picked up a SM420 and driveline for it. The stock rear is in place, but missing the yoke... I think I am going to change direction and build/find a 350 engine and 350 trans. I will probably buy the aftermarket bolt-on motor mount/x-member and tranny x-member. As for the rear end... I know that I will need to upgrade to accomodate the hp/tq of the new engine/trans. Here's where I need help: Is there a direct bolt in rear that will have the same mounting points and locations for using the existing suspension components? Also, do I even want to keep the stock style suspension with a beefier drivetrain? I think I will want this donor rear to have a 5-lug pattern as well... Thanks-Dano

I remember this from building my 69 Camaro.lol Are internals readily available for the stock rear axles? i know you can buy an aftermarket gear set or adapter for them, but are axles and yokes available? Thanks-Dano

I would use a 700-4R o-drive trans. if I was going with an automatic. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. The only thing that might be a problem is if you want a traction aid (Posi), there's none availible on the aftermarket, and the factory units, made from '60-'62, are very rare.

I DO like to make informed decisions though to cut down on the headaches Red, I checked out the site, looks cool! Thanks again! Dano
