I am picking up a nice '54 6100 tomorrow. I was trying to get a head start on a few items that I know that I'm going to need but everything seems to be pretty cosmetic. I know that these cabs have a lot of interchangeable parts with the smaller cabs such as window felt and window seals both of which I know I need to replace. I also need to replace the floor rubber and the undermatting. Is the floor mat interchangeable? I was going to try to make a parts run before I pick up the truck that way I have parts to change out this weekend.

welcome to the site! AS far as I know, the floor mat should be interchangeable. On the taskforce trucks, (55.2-59) the big bolts have a park brake lever on the transmission that the smaller trucks don't have so, they have an extra hole in the mat but, that is pretty easily remedied. The rest of the cab pieces are interchangeable on the newer ones and I believe should also be on yours as well.

How difficult is it to wire up the truck with a wiring harness for a trailer hookup with electric brakes?

If you have a 12V system and a 7 wire turn signal switch it’s not so difficult. Otherwise start with those then worry about trailer brake controller and wires to the back.

I also for to ask where one might obtain a replacement high lo gear knob that is attached to the gear shift.

I also forgot to ask where one might find a replacement 2 speed rear axle gear shift controller? It appears that the '54 was mounted on the dash from what I have read but this one has been moved to the gear shifter but seems to be missing the actual button.

Doesn't look like that truck needs too many parts changed out!

The parts you describe will fit across all model cabs, with the exception of COE models which have some unique pieces.

Does your truck have a cable on the transmission gear shift shaft and you are just looking for the little knob for it? post above you asked for a knob, then a button? If just the plastic knob on the end of a threaded shaft, you will probably need to just look around for something to fit. One of mine has the knob still, the other one, the PO brazed a 1/4" bolt across the top to make a "T" handle!

I got the truck back (at a friends house as he has more tools than I). It rained a lot today but I was able to confirm where rain was coming in. It is coming in thru 2 spots on the front windshield. I will try to fix it without replacing the seal first. But in the case I need to replace the seal, which one of the attached gaskets is the one that I need. I am new to this model truck and not quite sure of everything related to them.

It is still setup as a 6 volt system, but trying to figure out what all needs to be done to go ahead and convert it to 12 as I know this will be better in the long run.

Does your windshield seal/gasket have a stainless steel insert that "circles" the windshield.

That determines the type of seal that you need.

The seal and stainless steel insert is a PITA to install.

By the way, unless you need 12v add-ons, a properly cabled and maintained 6v system works very well. I have used five 6v Stovebolt/GMC trucks - one for 47 years.

All I see is windshield with rubber around it.

Then, that is the gasket you need.

If you want the best, buy from Steele Rubber Products (but, they cost much more).

Steele Rubber parts are on the way. Still have to look at all of the brakes but have one side of the duallies off. Pretty much decided to go ahead and convert 6v to 12v. I may be ruffling some feathers, but thinking of a 1 wire alternator. Those that do have one, what brand and part number are you running that you're happy with.

I also need to figure out what's going on with the turn signals. Every light works except those. I think it has something to do with turn signal at the column. It seems to want to rotate some when you move the turn signal lever.

I also need to ask if anyone has a photo of their hi-lo gear knob as it is attached to the stick shift. and is it a push/pull type or a turn left/right type. Looking at the manual, I thought there was a turn left/right knob on the dash as stated in the manual but there is not one there as there is one attached to the gear shift, but doesn't have a knob part, just the cable.

kclark, nice truck. Is it an unrestored original? I've seen many grain trucks like you have in farm country with very low miles. Your's could well be a great reference vehicle. RonR

RonR[/quote] Slightly unrestored original. The paint has been changed but other than that the cab has not been touched. The truck was originally a bus tow truck for an area school system. When it was sold it was converted to a dump truck and repainted.

Okay, Was that the School Bus Wrecker, that had the Shop built tow unit on the back, that used to be in the Transportation Museum, in Spencer, N.C. ? If so, I have a picture of it somewhere here, sitting inside the Museum.

Not that I'm aware of. This was owned by Rutherford County School District. Has been owned by the guy I bought it from for at least 20 years. I've got some photos of the back when it was in the process of being converted to a dump. But I don't have any showing the whole tow part just a small part of it right behind the cab.
