Complete chassis strip down is out of the question. Has anyone used POR-15 silver (in the red can) on their chassis & then topped it w/ POR-15 chassis black coat (in the yellow can)? I've read that the POR-15 silver color contains "metal fillers" which the black doesn't. Also considering spraying zerorust in the areas where POR-15 can't be squeezed in (after doing the POR-15 coat). Has anyone done this B4? Reaaly I'd like to just paint the entire frame/chassis w/ zerorust, but it's the pitted areas that raise concern. Maybe just do the pitted areas w/ POR-15, then paint the rest w/ zero rust? How nice it looks when done isn't really much concern here. Stopping further rusting is the main objective. Thanx. | | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 275 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2007 Posts: 275 | Why don't you just use body filler in the pitted areas, then POR-15 over that. OR, use body filler in the pits, prime it, sand it, then single stage the whole frame.
If you're just looking at just brushing paint, then go with the POR-15 over the body filler.
No better smell than that of fresh paint. I've been building and painting cars/trucks for 47 years. How do you prep the pits? What filler should be used b4 going over it w/ POR? Never done any body work. Thinking about using naval jelly on the pits, then using a screwdriver, ice pick, or anything to remove as much rust a possible. Then wash/ rinse those pitted areas, then heat them up a bit with a propane torch to rid trapped moisture. Must the pits be 100% rust free b4 applying filler? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,440 Moderator - The Electrical Bay | | Moderator - The Electrical Bay Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,440 | you paint the POR-15 over the rust... if you want to fill the pits, follow the directions on the POR-15 can concerning topcoating and body fillers.
I just hit the frame with my wire wheel / wire brush after cleaning it with oven cleaner to get rid of the grease and oils. I'm not even going to bother with the rust pits, since you cant see them when the cab, bed and fenders are on the truck.

Sounds to me like you really just want to stop the rust and what it looks like after the deal is not the main goal. If your not taking the truck off the frame as you know your not going to get all the rust and not going to be able to paint it in all the places that may need it. We have a 1960 TON truck we use for a dump truck and how pretty it looks is not even on the list. For you to do all that work to fill the pitted places seems like a lot of wasted work. I just guess it depends how what your going for. You said how nice it looked after it was done was not a concern so I would not waste my time with body filler. My guess would be to remove any lose stuff and clean it good and lay the Zero Rust stuff to it.. Or POR15.. I understand that POR15 won't hold up to the sunlight. So I myself would not put that on a dump truck frame because I am sure it sees alot of sunlight. I know ours would for sure.
At any rate...Good luck with it.
