I had a similar dilemma. I thought maybe I could order a set of personalized plates with the numbers on the original. obviously they would not match the original, but you would have both plates to get it registered.

Another quality post.

I've had a CA 1945/46 plate on my truck for many years and somewhere I have a DMV booklet that explains these two odd years re single plate. Of course in CA all this could have changed, bigger problem very few DMV workers know the rules re. YOM plates. I'll try to find my booklet and email you the pertinent pages.

In addition, there is a phone number you can call to speak to a person in the YOM dept, I used this number a couple years back so not sure if it still works.
YOM Field office support unit, 1 855 230 8747

Best of luck
Jim

Just revised my previous post. Though the plates are yellow/black, the tags are silver with red lettering.

You will need to find and purchase your own YOM plate from a vendor at a swap meet that sells these and you will need to make sure it's a 'clear' plate, meaning that number is not currently in use. that is what the YOM dept can tell you. So if you do not have an old plate already there is no need to call the number I gave you other than to inquire about this other plate to match the '45/'46.

If it were me I would purchase a pair of the CA new BLACK plates, easy deal and they look great also can personalize them.

YOM plates cost me an additional $10 per year for my vehicles, I believe the new black plates cost an additional $50 per year.
I see more of the new black plates on new cars than on vintage cars & trucks. It kind of blows up the whole "vintage" thing.

Read the attached CA DMV form should answer all your questions. See note re. 1945/46

The people at the DMV really don't have a clue here regardless of their own guidelines. But, if you buy YOM plate(s) for a truck or a car and it is clear you can register it, generally speaking.
I have seen 56 car plates registered to a 56 truck and vise versa. In most cases they won't know the difference. They can and will charge you weight fees for a commercial vehicle no matter what plate you find.

Alan,
Clearly all trucks are required to have commercial plates, that's what I was referring to about weight fees. Generally a commercial plate has a different letter/number sequence which would be clearly identifiable to any law enforcement officer. However, a vanity plate on a truck does not prove that it is a commercial vehicle, only the registration will show that. Look at the new "retro" black plates on new trucks, there is no "commercial" identifier. The point I was trying to make was that the CHP doesn't know if a vanity plate or a VOM plate represents a commercial vehicle. The possibility they are going to stop an old truck regarding what plates it has is slim to none, they have better things to do. I see older cars and trucks at shows that are registered with current white/blue plates painted yellow/black, black/yellow, and blue/yellow and nobody really cares.
