I am starting work to recover my truck bed - it is not supposed to be a full up restoration, just bring it back to life.

As I was disassembling things, I noticed something. There is a piece of angle that runs along either side of the truck bed. The wood bed pieces fit just under this piece of angle. Along the top edge of this angle, between the angle and the bed side, some sort of old, black "stuff" has been inserted. I don't know if it was some sort of liquid filler or some hind of weather strip material. Was this added by some previous owner, or is there supposed to be filler for rust protection? And at this point in its life, should I seal along this edge?

Bob,
I think that that angle iron is spot welded to the bed side. Somebody will correct me if I am wrong but the only truck I can examine this minute is my '51 and it is attached that way. You may not be able to detach it. Look for spot welds along the outside of the bed side. Another possibility is that it is some sort of anti-squeak material. I would not try to seal it, you may just trap moisture if not a complete seal. My 51 and my 37 are not sealed in this area.
