The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop GM Paint codes - HELP!!!!!!!

Can someone tell me where/how I can find paint by the code? The blue on my 57 is in far condition and with the dash plate I just welded in I’d like to spray the original color over the primed area.

The long and short of it,

Paint Code - GM-3878 with clear 3701

The only reason I know this is the PO left a touch up (plasti-kote) bottle in a box of stuff that can with the truck. I tested it, and it’s a perfect match.

might check a shop that sells lots of paint to body shops and see if they've got a stack of chip books to look thru, or some big box place that has lots of plastikote touch up paint, obviously a 'modern' color

I did a search for that Plasti-Cote part number and it coincided with a 1993 GM color of WA9544 which is a Medium Quasar Blue Metallic base coat/clearcoat. You should be able to use the GM code of WA9544 to get paint at any automotive paint store.

That's awesome that you were able to find that! I was searching and searching. . I don't know how you did it (care to share the secret?).

Plasti-kote didn't hit on there own product number through any search. But as soon as I drilled down with your numbers and the year, BANG! There it is.

To be honest, if I would have looked at the picture of your truck first, I probabably could have guessed it (I had a 91 Corvette that color). However, I just scrolled through each year on the Plasti-Kote site for GM colors until I found the GM 3878 number. Maybe not the most efficient way, but it worked. Glad to be able to help. I aquired somewhat of a passion for matching colors when I was a custom painter and frequently had to match colors that no one had documented at all.

Well now that you have Jim taken care of Jeff, maybe you can steer me in the right direction. I spent about 45 mins at Plasi-kote lookin for a paint number for the "New Ford Gray" engine enamel but it won't return anything, just no page found errors. The gray looks very close to the early AD 216 factory gray. I'd like to pick up a can and compare it to what I'm using.
Wonder if ya can help me out?

It looks like Plasti-Kote has two gray engine enamels which are "Universal Gray" and "New Ford Gray" as follows:

I know that you guys already your paint issues solved, but keep this in mind for future reference. I work for a company called Finishmaster. We handle body and paint supplies, and also mix pretty much all of the paint that we sell. We sell Dupont, Nason, Spies Hecker, Centari... It's a coporate company, and we have a bunch of stores all over the country. You can either bring in a paint code and we can cross reference it over, or, this is the wonderful part, bring a part with the paint on it that you'd like to match. As long as it's a flat surface, we can take a picture of it with this handy little camera, plug it in, and either find an existing match to the color, or make a new formula for it.
