Good evening guys.

I don't normally throw out a post unless I have tried several different things first. I scoured the forum archives today looking for answers but nothing that really helped. Ok, so as some know, I recently overhauled my 235 and just got it back into the truck, and now hooking everything back up.

I know that the gas pedal rods can kinda be a PITA sometimes, but man between the carb linkage and the accelerator rod, I am having issues getting it right. I replaced the linkage (or at least I thought I did), back on the pivot pin like it came off. For the past 2 days I have tried every combo and it's just not right.

You can see in the photos, if I hook the accelerator rod up to the linkage pivot (Sorry, I know the name of the part, sometimers has kicked in), it's too long. I have turned it around, moved rods around etc, and still can't seem to get it back like it was.

Hopefully the photos make sense and someone can see something obvious that I am not seeing.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin!

What year is your 235?

Is that accelerator rod from a truck?

1954 Chevy / 235. Same linkage / rod that came off it. I am just not getting it back on in the right combination or something.

The belcrank attaches forward of that freeze plug on my car 235

Not sure if you have another port to attach it to?

DADS50, Thanks for the photos and help! I have tried every combination with the bracket but will go back out after work today and study it some more and keep working with it!

Have a Great Day!

Kevin.

It looks like the rod that hooks to the pedal is upside down. The ball should be up at the hole in the floor.

If your engine does not have the forward provision for the bell-crank, you may want to look at my blog post as an option.

Thanks for the clarification! Hey, are you going to the Midwest All Truck nationals over in Riverside?

Thanks Dave!

I haven't changed anything on the throttle / carb linkage. It's just got me stumped but I will keep working with it until I get it!

Hey Kevin, take a deep breath and drink a beer or three and get back in there. These linkages are like those homemade horseshoe/chain puzzles Grampaw used to make. Sounds like you have a '54 truck with all of the '54 linkage parts. Is that correct? If so, you are in great shape.
It gets dicey when one is trying to gather parts from different years because there are different pivot points, rod lengths depending on the year. It doesn't sound like you are cursed with that scenario.

Hello Carl,

Yes sir, it's the same original linkage that came off the truck before I pulled the 235 for overhaul. I know they can be cantankerous but man, I can't seem to figure it out for whatever reason. I have tried every combination I can think of and it still isn't right. The way the bracket about has to mount is like example 9-4-2, for the carb linkage to fit right but the gas pedal rod is too long.

I tried it a different way, like DADS50 shows in his photo (mine is 9-4-1), and as you can see it puts the carb linkage too far back. Been tinkering with it off and on for 3 days.

Guys,

A BIG THANKS to everyone of you!

I don't want to modify or bend anything because everything on the truck is original and I was driving the truck before I pulled the engine to overhaul it. Looking back, I should have taken a photo of the linkage set up before removing it. I know they are very simple and there is only 1 way they will go back for everything to properly fit but I am just not finding it.

It will eventually come to me and I will just have to continue working with it. What would be really nice is if someone with a 54 Chevy pick up w/ original 235 would take a photo and post it.

Have a Great Day!

Kevin

How about trying this, take the rod going into the cab and turn it around to the other side of the bracket. Just flip it to the other side and the part in the cab should face up instead of down like it is. MAYBE!!!!

Your pic (linkage-2) in the first post is correct.

It's hitting the exhaust manifold stud/bolt because
when you installed the lever (which is correct) it was installed in the wrong position.

Remove everything and install the lever,
placing the lever end for the gas pedal (up) at about 12 o'clock.
The other end of the lever, carb end, is now
below the exhaust manifold with no interference.

Attach both rods shown in your linkage-2 pic, and you should be good to go.

Also, since you have the lever off,
I would suggest adding a bushing to the lever.
Another great idea in Dave's Blog.

Kevin - I went out and looked at my 54 3600, it looks like you have your "pivot" in the wrong hole . There should be another hole about 4-5 inches to the right of the front freeze plug and almost directly behind the exhaust manifold. See Pictures attached, the first pic shows where the pivot is on my 54", the second pic shows the attachment point you are using directly under the back freeze plug and above the oil pressure line block. Move your pivot Kevin and I think you'll get it handled. Let me know if you need more pics, I'll do my best to help.

Ronnie,

Thanks! I know that has been suggested but I didn't really give that a lot of thought. I will look tonight and see what I have. Man, Thank you and everyone for the assistance and for the photos!

Guy,

Thanks everyone of you who responded!!

Problem is resolved, thanks to everyone! Ronnie and DADS, Thank you very much! For the life of me, I couldn't get it in my mind that the Pivot (belcrank) was in the wrong hole but apparently the machine shop removed it and put it the wrong spot. What a pain it's been but man, THANKS!!!

Kevin

Just an FYI, you'll need to put some gasket sealer on that pivot when you re-install it, otherwise you just might have an antifreeze ( engine coolant ) leak. Enjoy that Truck Kevin.
